How to Care for Your New Garage Floors

First off, we have good news for you. When you install either polyaspartic or epoxy on your concrete garage flooring, it’s already easier to clean. However, that doesn’t mean you should leave it without any maintenance. Here are some steps to help prolong the life of your stunning garage flooring.

Keep the Surfaces Dirt and Grit Free

Dust can quickly accumulate with how many times you may walk on your garage flooring or how many items stay in the garage. If you let dust and debris remain on your new epoxy flooring for a long time, it can embed into the floor and cause scratches when you move around, move any machines, or drive. The last thing you want is to lose the showroom-ready glossy finish and have bad scratches instead. You can use a soft dust mop or a shop vacuum with a soft brush to sweep away dirt, sand, and any loose debris once or twice a week. Polyaspartic flooring is 3-5 times more durable than epoxy and 20x stronger, meaning maintenance is much easier! Monthly vacuuming or sweeps will not only help with the longevity of your coating but will also help maintain a “like new” finish of your floor.

Heavily Soiled Areas

As with any floor, leaks and spills need to be addressed immediately to prevent staining from occurring. Thankfully, polyaspartic and epoxy flooring have excellent water resistance, making it super easy for quick cleaning. When spot cleaning, simply wipe and vacuum the spilled liquid and wipe the area with a mop and warm water.

Automotive Chemicals, Oil, and Other Substances

Most epoxy floor solutions are not so resistant to chemicals. To protect your polyaspartic and epoxy garage flooring against chemicals, be sure to wipe up any liquids with a shop towel or paper towel as soon as possible, use a “gentle” cleaner if the spill is sticky, and use a neutralizing agent. Do not use any caustic materials such as brake cleaner to try to clean any spills or stains, as this will delaminate the floor and void your warranty

Stains

For any stain that may come onto your new polyaspartic or epoxy flooring, use warm water and a kitchen scrubbing sponge or soft deck brush to remove the stain. Be sure to scrub lightly to see the best results. The best cleaner for epoxy flooring is diluted ammonia. Not only is it simple to make, but it’s effective as it’s a ph-neutral cleaner and detergent that’s safe for garage flooring.

Don’t Forget the Basics!

Aside from everything we mentioned above, it’s best to treat your epoxy garage like any other room in your home. Look into using a walk-off mat at your garage entrance, as it will collect dirt, sand, and moisture from under your feet, saving you from cleaning your floors all the time. Additionally, soft pads under bicycles and motorcycle kickstands can aid in protecting the flooring from potential damage. Avoid using soap-based cleaners as they can leave a streak mark or residue on the epoxy coating surface.

Additional Tips from Our Experts

Look into using a welding mat for your garage flooring. This will help prevent damage from being done to your polyaspartic or epoxy floors. Avoid using any type of citrus cleaner or vinegar as they contain acids that can de-gloss the finish of your new polyaspartic or epoxy flooring. We want your garage to look like the showroom it deserves to be!
